I think that in the end we spent more time on research than we did on the actual site design and content.
We knew right from the start that the project was an ambitious one as we had a clear design brief in that we wanted to create a UK roofing services website that would out-rank the competition across the search engines within 12 months of launch.
To the uninitiated that might seem like a simple task but might I remind you that there are at least 30,000 UK roofing services sites covering the UK market; In effect that meant that we had to come up with a site that would beat the other 30,000.
Thanks to a few months research using adwords we knew which keywords were going to feature strongly on the site so the main focus was content and how we delivered it.
Website Design
I think the most important element of any site design is to get as much information as you can about who your customers are. You need to consider broad attributes such as:
Once you have a good idea of who your customera are you can then start looking around at the best examples of sites that cater for this customer group. You might think it gets more difficult here but actually it was pretty easy to see that all the main UK websites catering for our target customer group had a similar styling and formats. It may be that they all took advice from the same design agency but at the end of the day it didn’t matter as we were going to pitch our product in a similar format.
Of course we could have gone the wrong way about things and looked at what the other roofing service websites were doing and then created something similar. The reason I say the wrong way is that the vast majority of roofing related websites were not created to suit the profile of their customer.
In most cases they would have been designed with a lot of influence from the roofing company whose inspiration was derived from competitive roofing companies. There would be little or no thoughts on customer profiling or actually delivering a website that there customers would identify with.
That’s said, there are plenty of good roofing websites out there that are bringing home the bacon. My point however, is that if the site is tuned more to the customer it will bring in even more customer inquiries.
Site Content
So when it comes to providing good roofing services content on your website you can simply go and look at what the other roofing sites are doing and do the same. Of course you would be wrong again.
Once again we took a good hard look at what our customers wanted and then used that knowledge to create a site with content that the customer actually wanted. As for the other roofing service websites it appears that they think their customers want to read technical information on thousands of roofing materials which I’m afraid is just not so.
When it comes to content you have to be able to convey the content of your site very quickly to your visitor. If you then back it up and actually deliver the goods then you have a sticky site that will bring in the inquiries or conversions that you desire.
Site Appeal
All in all, probably the biggest decision any web designer will make is whether to build the website for the visitor or the search engines. When it comes to roofing services supermarket we made it clear right from the start that this website was built entirely for it visitors, everything else was secondary.
